PreK
In our first lesson we discussed the importance of cooperation and working together. I read the book, Swimmy, and we discussed how all the fish had to work together. Then we practiced cooperation as a class and put a classroom puzzle together. In our second lesson, we discussed the importance of liking who we are and accepting differences in others. I read the book, Elmer to help the students understand these concepts. The students then created and decorated their own Elmer craft.
Perseverance
K- The lesson started with us watching the video, 1,000 Steps. From the video, student were able to figure out that perseverance meant "to keep trying and never give up." Then I read the story, "The Little Engine That Could". As a class we discussed how the train had to show perseverance in the story. Then we talked about the importance of goal-setting and how you have to persevere to accomplish the goal you set. Last we made a classroom train that consisted of each student illustrating a goal they wanted to accomplish before the end of kindergarten.
1st- I showed a video called, Ormie the Pig. It was a funny video of all the different ways the pig tried to get the cookies off the top of the refrigerator. The kids were able to explain perseverance by watching this funny video. Then I read the book, Leo the Lightening Bug. We discussed how Leo had to persevere to get his tail light to work. We discussed the importance of goal-setting and how that correlated with perseverance. Then each student set a goal to accomplish by the end of first grade.
2nd- To capture the students attention about the definition of perseverance, they watched a clip from the, Nut Job. We discussed why we set goals for ourselves. Then I did a demonstration that showed how there can be many challenges that get in your way of meeting your goals. The second graders then set a goal for themselves to accomplish by the end of 2nd grade.
3rd- The third graders watched a video of Derek Redmond in the Olympics. He was an athlete that got hurt during a race and still persevered and finished it. Then I read the book, Salt in His Shoes. This story is about Michael Jordan and how he grew into being a basketball star. We discussed goals we can set for ourselves inside and outside of school. Then the third graders set goals for themselves to accomplish by the end of the year.

Careers
K- To introduce the students to the topic of careers, we discussed jobs that we have in our school and community. Then we discussed how sometimes you can tell what a person's job is by what clothes or shoes they are wearing. So I read the book, Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do, and had the students guess what job matched up with the clothes on each page. Then I read the book, Whose Shoes, and the students guessed what job would match up to each pair of shoes. Then the students did a matching game in the classroom where they had to match a vehicle with the job. Last, each student was given the book, Doctor, Doctor, What Do You See?, and we read it together as a class.
1st- I started the lesson with reading the book, When I Grow Up. We discussed jobs that they were familiar with and why people have jobs when they are adults. Then each student was given a card with a specific job on it. Last the students had to answer several questions about the career card they had in their hand.
2nd- I started this lesson with two videos: How Molly Moon Achieved the Ice Cream Dream & How Anna Banana Freeze Became a Breakdancer. The videos helped me explain that at their age they don't have to know what they want to be when they grow-up, but they should be thinking about things they are good at and enjoy doing. We talked a lot about how school relates to jobs when they get older. The students filled out a "Work Habits" survey to see what areas they could improve on in their job as a student.
3rd- I showed the students a powerpoint over "multiple intelligences". We discussed what they were and how different subjects or interests would correlate with each intelligence. Then the students filled out a survey on themselves to figure out what areas they are the strongest in. Then we filled in a chart as a class to see all the different ways we are smart!
