Compassion/Friendship
PreK- This month we did a lesson called, "Building Friendships". We read the book, My Friend and I. Then we had a discussion on ways to communicate with our friends and how to settle conflicts peacefully. We also talked about what character traits make a good friend.
K- We first watched a Sesame Street video on how a friend is caring. Then we talked about the character trait, compassion, and why it's important to show that trait in friendship. Then we read the book, Rainbow Fish. I discussed with the students the importance of friendship and we made a list of qualities a friend should have. Then the students made their own rainbow fish.
1st- I started the lesson by having the students watch the video, The Berenstain Bears - Think of Those in Need. Then we discussed what that video had to do with compassion, which is the character trait this month. Then we did a friendship lesson on the book, Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley. Then we discussed the story and talked about what qualities a good friend has. Then the students made a project called their friend "ship".
2nd- We started the lesson by watching a video that focused on friendship and compassion between an elephant and a dog. Then we had a discussion about friendship and the qualities a friend has. Then the students listened to the story, Enemy Pie. Then we created a recipe for friendship pie. Then the students got to make their own friendship pie craft.
3rd- The lesson started with a short animation video on a boy with a disability showing compassion for a dog with an injury. This started our discussion on compassion. Then we did a lesson called, Friendship Soup. We created a list of ingredients that would go into our recipe of friendship soup. Then the students were able to create their own friendship soup craft.
