Citizenship/Digital Citizenship
PreK- Our lesson this month was over what it means to have "good manners". We talked about having good manners when we are in public and during meals. They also had to teach an alligator some good manners :)
K & 1st - During our lessons, we discussed what citizenship looks like at school, home, and our community. Then our conversation led into what citizenship looks like on the internet. We talked about being respectful on the computer and going places safely on the computer by following 3 simple safety rules.
2nd & 3rd - In our lessons, we defined citizenship and gave examples of how we could show citizenship in many different settings. Then we talked about how citizenship is also important when we are on the internet. My lesson then involved showing what cyber bullying looks and sounds like on the computer. Our discussion ended by talking about what the correct steps to take if someone is cyber bullying you.

Problem-Solving
PreK- In our lesson, we discussed how we could problem-solve in our classroom and at home without the help of an adult. We talked about solving problems through sharing, talking turns, playing together, ignoring, and telling someone to "please stop". Then I gave the students some different scenarios and they were able to tell which solution they would use to try and solve the problem.
K- This lesson started out with the students understanding the difference between "small and big" problems. We talked about how grown-ups solve the big problems and we can solve the small problems by ourselves. Then we created a choice wheel that gave us many ideas of how to solve problems. Then we talked about each choice on the wheel and when we might use it.
1st- The students learned about the three steps of problem solving: What's the Problem?, Think About What To Do, Try An Idea. Then we discussed five problem-solving strategies the students could use. Students also recognized the importance of managing madness when dealing with a problem. Last the students were faced with a problem and they had to apply the problem solving model when figuring out how to fix it.
2nd- Students identified common problems that can happen throughout the day. Then we read the story, "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, and discussed some of Alexander's problems. I then shared a problem-solving signal with them which reminds them of three words "Think," "Say", and "Do" when solving a problem. Then the students applied the problem-solving technique to a scenario.
3rd- As a class we defined what a conflict is. Then we discussed how a conflict can cause a disagreement or a fight. I also made it clear that conflicts just happen they are not good or bad, but we can choose how we handle them. Then we went over the rules for fighting fair when in a conflict. Last, the students watched, "The Zax", and discussed how they didn't apply the rules for fighting fair and come up with their own way to solve the conflict.
