Careers
PreK- We discussed what jobs were and why people have jobs. The students identified some jobs that they knew in our school and community. Our discussion also made them realize they can be anything they want to be when they grow up. They then listened to the story, The Berenstain Bears "On The Job". The students were able then to illustrate one job they might want to be when they grow up.
K- I read the book, LMNO Peas. This book goes through every letter in the alphabet and identifies jobs that start with that letter. I then showed the students my bag of tools. I explained that in a lot of jobs you have to use specific tools to do your job well. After I pulled out each tool, the students told me what job would match up with it. Last, the students illustrated a picture of what they might want to be when they grow-up and included tools in their picture.
1st: I started my lesson with a video titled "Career Day". The video helped remind the students of several jobs they can be when they become an adult. Then we discussed the following categories: creative, fix or build, animals, plants, helping others, and kids. The students then helped sort the career cards into the correct categories. Students then made "career sunglasses" illustrating a job they might want to be when they grow up and what tools would go with that job.
2nd: At the beginning of the lesson, we filled in a graphic organizer on the following career paths: nature, creative, helping, fixing & building, health, and business. For each career path we filled in the following categories: skills and interests, subjects needed in school, and possible careers. Last the students got to make career ice cream cones. The students choose a career path and recorded four possible jobs that would fall within that career path.
3rd: For this lesson, we did some career searching on the computer. The students went to the Kidsearch link on the Virginia CareerView Website. The link had them select their interests and then it matched jobs to their interests. Then the students selected one of the careers and filled out an information sheet on it. I also had a Career Fair for my third graders so they could have the opportunity to interview a working professional with a job that appealed to them.

* With each grade level, we went over their goals that had set in April and reflected on if they had met their goals. Then we did an end of the year activity on "why it's been a great year".
