Diversity/Gratitude
PreK- We had a discussion on how we are different on the outside and inside. Then we read the book,"It's Ok To Be Different". Then the preschoolers created their own self-portraits picking colors to match their skin, eye and hair color.
Kindergarten- The lesson started with the students listening to the, "Thankful Book". We discussed how gratitude means being thankful for the things you have and saying "thank you" to others. Then while reading the book, "Shades of People", we talked about how they are both the same and different on the outside and inside. Then they watched the Sesame Street Video called, "Colors of Me." We then talked about how they should be proud of they way they look and they created a self-portrait.
1st Grade- We first started our lesson off by reading the book, "Splat says, Thank You." We talked about ways you could show gratitude through both words and actions. Then we watched a video based on the story, "The Crayon Box That Talked." The students created a picture first by using just one color and then created the same picture again using several crayons. The students agreed they liked the picture better that used many colors. The discussion then led to how we are all very different and how boring it would be if we were the same. The students then were able to create their own crayon.
2nd Grade- The 2nd graders were introduced to the character trait, gratitude, and then came up with ways they could show gratitude. Then the students made a card for someone they are grateful for and described on the card why they are so grateful for that person. Next we talked about MLKJR and discussed how his wish was that he wanted everyone to be treated equal no matter what we looked like. I then did 3 different activities with the 2nd graders to show them the most important thing about a person is what is on the inside not on the outside.
3rd Grade- In 3rd grade, I explained gratitude by showing the students a cup half filled with water. Then we discussed if it was half full or half empty. I explained gratitude means seeing the cup as always being half full and feeling thankful for what you have. Then the students wrote on a gratitude flower several things they were grateful for. Then we watched a video over MLKJR and discussed how he wanted everyone to be treated equal. We also discussed that we have similarities and differences and we should be proud of what we look like. The students created their own hand prints and then wrote one thing on each fingerprint about what makes them special.
